For the five young women on the USA gymnastics team, it doesn't get much bigger than bringing home Olympic gold… or so they thought. Following their glowing night atop the medal podium in London, the Fab Five learned their success had inspired some of the biggest celebrities in pop music — Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber.
It started after team leader Jordyn Wieber tweeted a request looking to cash in on her team's Olympic domination: "Now that we are OLYMPIC champions … Can we please meet@justinbieber??" Within minutes, she received the next best thing, a personal message from the 18-year-old pop star saying, "@jordyn_wieber u support me i support u. congrats… #DREAMBIG."
The Biebz then tweeted to the entire gold medal squad with some added praise, "CONGRATS…on your GOLD MEDAL #BeliebersWinGold #Proud."
While the girls melted in the glow of Bieber's praise, another megastar with dreams of inspiring young people got in on the congratulations act. Lady Gaga, who has a record setting 27.8 million Twitter followers, responded to America's gymnastics win with the message, "Woohoo! Gold for the ladies! just want to squeeze them! So much talent and beauty. Did u seem all holding hands? There's no 'I' in team."
World-class vaulter McKayla Maroney was particularly moved by Gaga's tweet; she replied, "This team loves you & your music! I also heard you were a gymnast??"
To Maroney's surprise, her question did not evaporate into the social media mist. Instead, Gaga sent her the direct message, "You were brilliant give all the girls a kiss for me. And no I did gymnastics for like a weeks and then dropped out for ballet!" To which the 16-year-old Maroney left Lady Gaga with some words of encouragement, "Your [sic] so amazing I bet you still have a shot at gymnastics! 2016 maybe."
